Green Cleaning Products are Finding its Way into Crucial Legislation

Across the globe, many countries are struggling to get its economy going. Legislation is crucial in making an economy vibrant once more. For this reason, there is a long time debate on having an environment-friendly economy versus the traditional one, which puts emphasis on cost-effectiveness and results-orientation. The price to pay on being eco-friendly is perceived to be high. So many legislators, especially the more budget-focused in mentality, opt to maintain the way of life known to them rather than choose an alternative that may mean more expense.
Choosing a “green" economy is quite complicated, not to mention expensive. We are still in the process of creating a green technology, which calls for our resources to be poured on this particular endeavor. However, many environmentalists claim that caring for and sustaining the environment is a far more cheaper option in the long run.

The use of green products is slowly finding its way into legislation. The latest is in the United Sates, where a number of states have required their schools and federal buildings to utilize eco-friendly cleaning products. There are ten states, which have passed the law on the use of green cleaning products like floor waxes and window cleaners. In choosing green products, the environment is protected from potential pollutants like harsh detergents and soap. It will also minimize the risk to the health of the cleaners and the children, who are the most vulnerable group. The rationale behind the bill is to ensure that the schools and government buildings are safe, non-toxic and healthier for the children as well as the general populace. Other than cleaning products, the bill also stipulates the use of environment-friendly paper products including paper used in school, tissue papers, paper towels and trash bags.

This bill is certainly a good boon to the environment as well as their staunch supporters. It has, however sparked much controversy in the US. The problem lies on the cost. Choosing green is said to be expensive especially for those states, which could not afford this new scheme. However, there is a number of eco-friendly cleaning products available in the market today, that have competitive prices, not very different from the usual products that are often used. These products are said to be effective too although when they were introduced they failed to keep up to their commercial counterparts. Inaddition, the cleaning companies will need to apply for a certification in order to bid. They are also urged to use products in a manner that will conserve water.

However, the cost of recycled paper is 20% more than the commercial products. This is an area still in the process of being resolved. Though in a survey conducted where there are several states that have attested that their cost rose when they use green products, the general direction remains to be sustaining a green economy.
